A big week for European entrepreneurs: Congratulations to Supercell & Wunderlist

Atomico was founded on the belief that great technology companies can come from anywhere, not just Silicon Valley. We have always believed that the greatest opportunity available to investors today is in identifying these companies in tech hubs like Berlin, Helsinki, London and Stockholm, and adding genuine value to them through our experience and expertise.

This week we are extremely proud to see two of our portfolio companies achieve huge milestones that are testament to this belief.

Softbank, the Japanese Internet giant who first invested in Supercell in October 2013, have now purchased the stakes of all other external investors in the company, including Atomico. Based in Helsinki, Supercell has become the world’s most successful mobile gaming business since launching its first titles just three years ago. Now, one of the world’s largest technology groups is doubling-down on their commitment to them and we’re sure that Supercell will continue to grow and produce even more games that users all over the world want to play for years.

Separately, Microsoft has purchased Berlin-based 6WunderKinder. Again, this is an example of one of the world’s biggest companies committing to a rapidly-growing business built in one of Europe’s emerging tech hubs. Since we first invested over three years ago, we’ve seen Christian and the team not only build a product millions of people use, but a brand millions of users really love. This announcement marks the beginning of a new phase of the company’s growth and we’re confident they will have great success alongside Microsoft.

These announcements are evidence of the fantastic companies being built outside of Silicon Valley and we’re proud to have been able to work alongside them during such important stages in their development.
